Austin Westlake's 4-part drill to build a swarming Defense to create turnovers

411 - Defensive Disadvantage Drill 4-part defensive progression

True 2 Hoops is pleased to welcome Head Coach Vickie Benson to the platform. The video she provided to True 2 Hoops is one of her favorite defensive set of drills. First, the team goes one-on-one in stopping the ball, then they move to a two-on-one trap emphasizing player communication and footwork. The next step in the drills is adding a four corner set up, creating a trap and then adding a floater to pick off long passes. The final drill continues the four corner setup but this time defenders are focusing on a hard closeout, disrupting passes and steals. To make the drill game-like, once a steal occurs, a fast break ensues. There are some great teaching points along the way regarding how to get to a pass quicker, footwork and proper closeouts.

A career 500+ game winner, Coach Benson lead the 6A Austin Westlake Girls Basketball team this past season to a school record 40-game win streak, a third straight district title, the first regional championship in 23 years and the first state finals appearance in 30 years.

Previous to Westlake, Coach Benson led the Bowie High School girls basketball program in Austin where she spent 12 years as head basketball coach and classroom teacher. She led the Bowie girls teams to five consecutive basketball district championships and advanced to the 6A state playoffs 10 consecutive years.

Welcome to True 2 Hoops Coach!

RUN AND JUMP PRESS DEFENSE

True 2 Hoops visited Lanier High School, one of San Antonio's oldest high schools, and got a run through of "run and jump" press defense the Voks have made famous over the years. Head Coach Joseph Martinez, an alum of Lanier, showed us his drills he has the team work on to get them ready to run the press. Then he took us through the goals and rotations they use to get steals and disrupt the opponent's offense. This was an early season workout, so some of the players were just getting the techniques and rotations down.
